RAAGA BAGESHREE

RAAGA PARICHAY or DESCRIPTION
RAAGA: BAGESHRI, BAGESHREE; Also known as: Bagesari, Bageshwari, Vageshwari
ABOUT THE RAAGA:
1.      Bageshree is a very melodious, ancient, ‘big’ Raag-ang raga, popular even with children.
2.      This is a pure Raga that is generated from Raag Kafi by decreasing the influence of Rishabh and Pancham.
THAAT:  Kafi
ORIGIN OF RAAGA:
1.      Bageshree finds mention in the older treatises as “Vageeshwari.”
2.      It is said to have been invented by Tansen, the court singer of Mughal Emperor Akbar.
SVARAS [Please refer to “Notations / Swar Mapping”]:
S 'n 'D 'n S m, m g R S
As seen above, all notes are shuddha except Gandhar and Nishad, which are Komal.
VAADI SVARA: Maddhyam is the Praan of the Raaga - the whole swaroop of the Raaga structured around it.
SAMVAADI SVARA: Shadaj
AAROH: 'n S g m, D n S'
AVROH: S' n D P m, g R S
VIVAADI SVARA/S: (also known as Vajr / Varjit / Enemy / Forbidden Notes): R & P in Aaroh
NIYAAS SVARA/S: Maddhyam is a Niyaas Bahutva note in both Aroah and Avroah - S 'n 'D n S m, g m D..m, n D..m, S m g..R S 'D 'n S m,
VISHRANTI STHAAN
KHAAS PRAYOG OF SVARAS (SPECIAL USAGE):
1.      R, often Verjit in Aroah, is occasionally used Deerga in Avroah, m g m g R..S, or as a Kann of Shadaj, m g (S)R S.
2.      G is an important note that can be rendered Deerga in Aroah and Avroah, m g..R S, 'n S g m, D m, g m g..R S, m P D g, or as a touch note, m g m g R S. At times, it is skipped as 'D 'n S m.
3.      P is generally used in a Vakra fashion,  n D P D m g;  or straight as S' n D P m g m n D P m g R S
4.      D is another important Niyaas Bahutva note in Uttrang, g m D, n D..m, m D n S' n D, m P D m g R S.
5.      n is an important passing note in both Aroah and Avroah, i.e. m D n S', S' n n D, m D n n S'.
6.      Swara Sangaties like S-m, D-m, M g-M g, D g, are frequently used during elaboration of the Raaga.
JAATI: Almost all versions of Bageshree can be grouped under three main jatis:
1.      Audav Shadava: R and P varjit in Aaroh, P in Avroh - sufficient to define the raga-lakshanas.
2.      Audav-Sampoorna: R and P varjit in Aaroh only - most performed versions adopt this and involve a peculiar avarohi pancham-laden tonal cluster.
3.      Sampoorna-Sampoorna:  All swaras present, in vakra prayogas.
4.      Some consider basic swaroop as Shaudav-Sampoorna, where P is skipped in Aaroh.
PAKAD / MUKHYA-ANG: S 'n 'D 'n S m, m g, R S, or m g m D n D m, G m D

RAAGA-ANG RAAGA:
2.      Phrases like S 'n 'D 'n S m, m g, R S, or m g m D n D m, G m D are very peculiar to the Raga, and help in making it a Raga-ang Raga.
3.      Examples are Bageshri Kannhada, Bageshri Bahar, Shahana, Ragesri, Malgungi etc.
RAAGA VISTAAR:
Characteristic phrases:
S, n’ D’, D’ n’ S m, m  g, (S)R, S
The m is powerful, & the melodic centre of gravity.  In avaroh, a modest pause on g is prescribed (it helps prevent a spillover into Kafi). A kan of S is imparted to R.
S g m, m g m D, D n D, D-m, g, (S)R, S
The raganga  is embedded here.  Note the niyas on D and the D-m sangati.
g mD n S”
g m n D n S”
m D n S”
Each of these arohs allows an uttaranga launch. See how to insert P in avroh:
S”, (n)D n D, m P D (m)g, (S)R, S
P could be touched or clear in aaroh e.g. D n D, P D n D.
S g m, m g, m, M g (S)R, S
Observe the vakra use of R aaroh.  Steer clear of Abhogi –uccharana bheda  separates Bageshree and Abhogi in this region of the poorvanga.
Second quarter of the night - madhya raatri
RAS:
1.      Its emotional nature is considered to be of a romantic longing – it depicts the emotion of a woman waiting for reunion with her lover.
2.      It is a melody that pleases in isolation and is effective in emotional expression.
3.      This Raaga is suitable for both types of Shringars namely Virah and Karuna.

SONGS FROM HINDI FILMS - BASED ON OR INSPIRED BY RAAGA BAGESHRI:
1.      Aankhon aankhon mein - Jaanwar - Lata Asha - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dc8OkCoH3vo  Although there is a generous use of Rishabh, the prelude is all over the place, certain phrases are not exactly Bageshri like, along with the use of some vivadi notes, the song is still inspired by Bageshri.
2.      Baagon mein kaise ye phool khilte hain - Lata, Mukesh - S D Burman - Chupke Chupke (1975)  -  http://youtu.be/v2lxsXa_Nkk
3.      Chaah Barbad Karegi_K.L.Saigal in Shahjahan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QvxeVUyQAY  Not many today appreciate the extent of sway K.L. Saigal held over the Indian musical imagination in the first half of the 20th century. Even if all Saigal-sahab did was snore, it would still have musical value. Here he wields Naushad‘s tune in SHAHJEHAN (1946)
4.      Chalak Rahi Boonde Mitwa, Starring: Kanan Kaushal, Movie- Maya Machindra 1975 full movie – couldn’t find the track! - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udgyyNMglJg

"Bhoole Se Kar Liya Pyaar, Ho Gayi Nadani" also from Bhoot Nath by lata... u can hear strains of nain so nain & jaag dard-e-ishq… Malgunji is a complex Raga of the Khamaj Thaat having elements of Raga Rageshri (in the ascent), Raga Bageshri ( in the descent) and a few subtle touches of Jaijaiwanti. If traditionally Bageshri evokes feelings of separation from the lover, and Rageshri represents reunion, Malgunji depicts the initial realization of the reunion… can u sense the mood…? read about the nava rasas at http://indian-classical-music-hindustani.blogspot.com/2011/05/nava-rasaas.html

CLASSICAL COMPOSITIONS VOCAL - BANDISHES:
1.      In his day, Rajab Ali Khan (1874-1959) was known as much for his tremendous musical acumen as for his picaresque ways.  A master vocalist, he was also proficient on the Rudra Veena, Sitar and Jala-Tarang. Several musicians of high standing learnt from him, among them his nephew Amanat Khan, Nivruttibuwa Sarnaik, Ganpatrao Dewaskar and others.  Lata Mangeshkar, too, briefly took taleem from Rajab Ali during her stint under Aman Ali.  He sings the traditional composition, kaun karata tori binati.
2.      Koun Karat Tori Binti (Khyal, Raag-Bageshri)--Jnanendra Prasad Goswami https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWrisRovtbA
3.      Koun Karat Tori Binati Piyarwa https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8y8hkalWoc
CLASSICAL COMPOSITIONS VOCAL - TARANAS (give me the best vocal flavor of a raga) & NOM-TOME AALAAPS:
1.      Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan~Bageshree Tarana - it was rare for bade ghulam ali khan to be accompanied on harmonium so prominently. just think how much nicer sarangi accompaniment would have sounded here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qj3ItA3Ff1g
2.      Raag Bageshri ( a short tarana ) by Rustum Fateh Ali Khan .flv https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9bXN72c7Ms
3.      Mogubai Kurdikar‘s tarana is set to the 15-matra Sawaritala.
4.      Ashish Sable - Bageshri (Nom Tom Aalaap) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqQBR03WCO0
5.      Tarana - Raag Bageshri https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sqHsMpjhYE
6.      The reflective temper of Amir Khan is well-matched to Bageshree’s expansive space.  The rich, measured strokes of his vocal brush hold us captive to this séance.  He picks up a traditional vilambit composition, bahu guna ka mana, and tops it off with a tarana.
